The other day someone told me: Oh my god, you won't go to these (many) cities... And I replied: What? Of course we will go, I just skipped many things and details because if I start to write about all these cities I'll end the next month. One of them was Valdivia: City of Beer... There's a lot of beautiful attractions and German culture, but there's beer too. Further South is Frutillar: City of music; with one of the best views of Volcan Osorno and Lago Llanquihue. I personally love the outskirts of Llanquihue Lake, because there's other cities like Puerto Varas or Puerto Octaywith apeculiar architecture (Yes, German) that is only in this area. For more details about attractions in this places just wait for "What To See" by Tour Girl. Ok, back to the route. Starting from Coihaique and going down the highway, Carretera Austral; we must go through the cities: Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez, Chile Chico and Cochrane. In this area we have this parks and national reserves:
Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo.
Reserva Nacional Lago General Carrera.
Reserva Nacional Jeinemeni.
Reserva Nacional Lago Cochrane.
Parque Cerro Santiago.
I'm using the list because we still have to choose the ones we'll visit. I'd just choose all of them but sadly the time is limited and we don't want to be running everywhere then. Once we get to Cochrane there's only 124km. to come to Caleta Tortel; a village located between theNorthern Patagonian Ice Field and Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Close to Tortel is Puerto Yungay, where we must take a free ship called Padre Antonio Ronchi at Mitchell Fjord (45min). In the other extreme, there's 100km more to come finally to Villa O'higgins; the end of Carretera Austral. The only way to go to the rest of Chilean cities in south like Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas (from Villa O'higgins) is through Argentina.
+ How to cross from Villa O'higgins to Argentina: I'm a littleamazed about it, because it's a very remote place and there are many ways to do it. And the best part is that you can combine them!
Horseback riding, bikes, buses and ships are some of these ways to cross Lago O'higgins and Lago del Desierto. The rest of the route we could just walk or rent a bike (around 40min.) to come to ports.

Lago O'higgins (Ship)(2.5 hours): Around $44.000 CLP (70 USD).
Lago del Desierto (Ship)(30min): Around $18000 CLP (28 USD).
The border between the countries is after Candelario Mancilla, and before Lago del Desierto, where we have to pass through Chilean and Argentine customs.
El otro día alguien me dijo: Dios, no irán a estas ciudades (muchas)... Yo contesté: ¿Qué? Por supuesto que iremos, solamente me salté un montón de cosas y detalles, porque si empiezo a escribir sobre todo esto voy a terminar el próximo mes. Una de ellas era Valdivia: Ciudad de la cerveza... Hay numerosos atractivos turísticos y cultura alemana, pero también mucha cerveza. Más al Sur está Frutillar: Ciudad de la música; con una de las mejores vistas al Volcán Osorno y Lago Llanquihue. Me gustan mucho los alrededores de este lago, porque hay otras ciudades como Puerto Varas o Puerto Octay con una arquitectura peculiar (Sí, alemana) que es sólo es posible encontrar en esta zona. De vuelta a la ruta. Empezando por Coihaique y bajando por la Carretera Austral; deberemos pasar por las ciudades: Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez, Chile Chico y Cochrane. En esta área tenemos los siguientes parques y reservas nacionales:

- Reserva Nacional Lago General Carrera.
- Reserva Nacional Jeinemeni.
- Reserva Nacional Lago Cochrane.
- Parque Nacional Cerro Santiago.
Uso la lista porque aún tenemos que escoger los que visitaremos. Me encantaría elegirlos todos pero tristemente no tenemos todo el tiempo del mundo, y después no queremos estar corriendo de un lado para otro.
Una vez que lleguemos a Cochrane estaremos a sólo 124 kilómetros de Caleta Tortel; un pueblo ubicado entre los Campos de Hielo Norte y los Campos de Hielo Sur. Cerca de Tortel está Puerto Yungay, en donde deberemos tomar una barcaza gratuita llamada Padre Antonio Ronchi en el Fiordo Mitchell (45min). Ya en el otro extremo, sólo quedarán 100km para llegar finalmente a Villa O'higgins; el fin de la Carretera Austral. La única manera de ir al resto de ciudades chilenas en el sur como Puerto Natales o Punta Arenas (desde Villa O'higgins) es a través de Argentina.
+ ¿Cómo cruzar desde Villa O'higgins a Argentina?
La verdad es que estoy un poco asombrado sobre esto, porque estaremos en un lugar muy remoto y aún así hay muchas maneras de hacerlo. Y la mejor parte es que se pueden combinar!
Cabalgatas, bicicletas, buses y barcazas son algunas de las formas de cruzar el Lago O'higgins y el Lago del Desierto. El resto de la ruta podemos caminar o arrendar una bicicleta (alrededor de 40min.) para llegar a los respectivos puertos.
